How We Captured a Traditional Polish Wedding (Oczepiny) with a Modern Twist

There’s a moment in every traditional Polish wedding reception where the energy shifts. The formal speeches are done, the first dances have warmed the floor, and then… the music changes. The MC announces, “Pora na oczepiny!” (Time for the unveiling!). This is when the timeless ritual of Oczepiny begins, and as a photographer, it’s one of my favourite parts of the night to capture.
I recently photographed a wedding for Magda and Jan, a wonderfully creative couple who wanted to honour this tradition but make it feel uniquely theirs. Their approach was a perfect example of how to blend heritage with personal style, and the photos that came from it were full of joy, laughter, and meaning.
What Are Oczepiny? A Brief History
Traditionally, Oczepiny marked the transition of the bride from a maiden to a married woman. The bridesmaids would remove the bride’s wreath (wianek) and veil, symbolically “unveiling” her, and replace it with a matron’s cap (czepiec). Today, it has evolved into a playful, interactive game for all the single guests, led by the newlyweds.
Magda & Jan’s Modern Oczepiny: The Setup
They kept the spirit but updated the props and games. Instead of a simple veil and cap, they had two boxes decorated by a local artist.
For the “Single Ladies”: The box contained fun, symbolic items—a toy stork (for fertility), a miniature globe (for travel), a small book (for wisdom), and a lottery ticket (for luck).
For the “Single Men”: Their box held similar themed items—a steering wheel toy (for a new car), a funny diploma (for success), a small bottle of good whiskey (for celebration).
The Photographic Story of Their Ritual
1. The Announcement & The Circle.
The DJ played a modern folk-pop remix. The wedding coordinator gathered all the single guests in a large circle on the dance floor. My first shots were wide, capturing the anticipation and smiles. I got low to show the circle of feet, a classic compositional tool that draws the viewer in.
2. The Bridal Party’s Playful Role.
Magda’s maid of honour was blindfolded and spun around (gently!). She then pointed to a single woman in the circle, who was brought to the centre. The same happened for Jan’s best man choosing a single man. The reactions—mock surprise, laughter, shyness—were candid gold. I used a fast shutter speed to freeze the spinning and the pointing.
3. The Heart of the Ritual: Passing the “Veil.”
Magda and Jan stood back-to-back in the centre. To cheers, they passed Magda’s bouquet over her shoulder to the chosen single woman, and Jan passed his tie (or a garter) to the chosen man. The tradition says they will be the next to marry. I positioned myself to capture the pass and the reaction of the recipients in one frame.
4. The Modern Twist: The Game.
Here’s where Magda and Jan’s personal touch shone. Instead of just presenting the items, they turned it into a quiz. The chosen pair had to answer silly questions about each other (e.g., “What is your dream holiday?”) based on what they’d learned chatting earlier. If they matched answers, they “won” an item from the box. The interaction was hilarious and broke the ice perfectly.
5. The Celebration & Integration.
After the game, the newly “coupled” guests were given a spotlight dance. But the genius was that Magda and Jan then invited all couples onto the floor, turning the focus from “singles” to universal love and celebration. The circle opened up, and the party truly began. I captured the sweep of this moment from a balcony, showing the entire room joining in.
Why This Matters for Your Photos
Oczepiny is a story within a story. It’s not just an event to list; it’s a chapter full of characters, emotion, and interaction.
It Reveals Personality: How a couple approaches this tradition says a lot about them. Playful? Traditional? Artistic? The photos will show it.
It’s Peak Candid Moment: You can’t pose this. The joy is 100% real, and that authenticity translates into powerful, emotive images.
It Connects Generations: Often, the older guests are the most delighted, remembering their own Oczepiny. Capturing their smiles and nods as they watch is priceless.
If you’re planning to include Oczepiny—or any tradition—talk to your photographer about it beforehand. We can anticipate the flow, know where to stand to capture both the action and reactions, and ensure the unique, modern twist you’ve added is beautifully documented.
Magda and Jan’s day showed me that tradition isn’t about doing things the old way; it’s about passing the spirit forward in a way that resonates with your own hearts. And that is always, always worth photographing.
Na zdrowie i szczęście!
